Novak Djokovic overcame Jannik Sinner and displaced a good part of the insiders, experts and former champions, who were almost giving for certain the success of the South Tyrolean over the Belgrade star. Among them is also tennis legend John McEnroe, who after the match in Melbourne commented thus to Eurosport on Sinner&#8217s first defeat at the Australian Open since 2023.

“In a way we all took it for granted that the student was just a thread stronger than the master, much younger and, it was assumed, much hungrier. And instead, the master gave another lesson to the’pupil” admitted the’former American tennis player.

“I wonder, how can Nole be so hungry and want to win so badly? To be able to find the strength, to dig so deep — and believe me, he had to dig just that deep to pull off such a performance”.

According to McEnroe, the serve played a decisive role: “We said it, to pull it off he had to be able to have a flawless serve. And he did it throughout the match”.
