Olimpia Milano: Ettore Messina explains the reasons for his resignation

It was supposed to be a final year to close, at best, an adventure that was nonetheless stimulating and, trophies in hand, also with several satisfactions (three Scudetti, two editions of the Coppa Italia, three victories in the Italian Supercoppa and even a Euroleague Final Four in 2021). It was supposed to be a celebration of a splendid career, in which he proved to be one of the best coaches ever.

In contrast, Ettore Messina stepped aside this season, tired of, in his own words, being “a divisive factor”. No “last dance”, better to leave to others, specifically to his natural heir Peppe Poeta, the mission of shaking up a team that seemed to always fall back into the same problems and they are not for the issue related to injuries (however many over the past few seasons).

His resignation dates back to Nov. 24 when, complete with a statement, came the (shocking) news of his farewell. Remaining at Olimpia with an important managerial role, Ettore Messina, a guest on Sky Sport’s program with the Buffa-Ferri duo, explained the reason for his farewell, referring to the many criticisms he suffered via social media. Criticism, which in the end, affected his thinking, to the point of taking a step back.

“Trivially, the answer that comes to me is: if you care, you can’t not care, if not, you have to have a level of certainty in your means that allows you to say: whatever, those who criticize or those who send you anonymous emails of insults have in my mind no right to exist”, his words.

“I don’t go on Instagram, I don’t go on TikTok… But the simplest thing that happens to you is that maybe a friend, in absolute good faith, writes to you and says, “gee, I read what they said, but I’m with you.” In this way, unintentionally, he has already made you feel bad, you know? So the noise you can’t hide it, the noise is there and it’s a very loud noise” his closing.
