Great disappointment for Arianna Fontana in the Olympic 1,000-meter final: the Italian champion failed to get on the podium partly because of a contact with Chinese rival Gong Li, an episode that changed the face of the race and ignited controversy in the aftermath of the race: “It is infuriating to finish a final in this way, so it is impossible to fight for the podium. There is a lot of bitterness for that ‘splash’, the contact took away my chance to play it” she said. In the hours after the race, Arianna Fontana entrusted her thoughts to a Facebook post.

The star athlete from Sondrio especially wanted to explain the tears she shed after the race: “Today I finished fourth. A difficult race, a race that took away more from me than it gave me. I was angry. I tried to stay strong, to keep everything inside, as I always did. Then I saw you guys. My family. My friends. And there I couldn’t take it anymore. Tears flowed without asking permission. Not because of the outcome. But for everything behind it. Because with you I can be myself”.

“Even fragile. Even wounded. Even tired. You really know me. You know who I am when no one is looking, when the stopwatch stops, when the medals do not speak. You always support me. Regardless of the number next to my name. And that is what makes me strong. That’s what keeps me standing. Thank you to those who were there. Thank you to those who hugged me without saying anything. Thank you to those who cried with me. Thank you to those who love me not because of what I win, but because of who I am. I lost a race today. But I go home with something much bigger. My people. My strength. My why” he wrote.

Thousands of fans commented on her post with messages of encouragement, but disposing of the great anger will be tough, not least because the champion is seeking the all-time record for Olympic medals for an Italian athlete (a record currently shared with fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti).

Born in 1990, the Yellow Flames athlete has 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 5 bronze medals in her trophy case. In Beijing 2022 she became the most medal-winning Italian athlete ever among women, and in Milan Cortina brought the medal tally for Italy in Olympic short track to 17. Of these, in 13 there&#8217s her hand.
