Samer Tawk finished only 107th in the men&#8217s Olympic 10km cross-country ski race at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, but he cheered at the finish line for his incredible feat, which is worth as much as and more than a gold medal. The Lebanese skier in 2019 had been the victim of a terrible fall from a cliff that left him dying and with multiple fractures in his legs and arms, but through sheer force of will he managed to recover and participate in the Olympics.

Tawk had fallen seven years ago from a rock face while skiing: he crashed to the ground after a 50-foot flight, sustaining very serious multiple fractures, some exposed, in all four limbs. After being on life support for several days, the Lebanese athlete had to undergo nine surgeries to return to using his legs and arms. Doctors gave his competitive career as over.

After losing nearly 20 kilograms of muscle following the ordeal in the hospital, Samer Tawk decided to return to skiing.
