Record-breaking Italy chooses its symbols: Vittozzi and Ghiotto flag bearers in Verona

It will be Lisa Vittozzi and Davide Ghiotto who will represent Italy during the Closing Ceremony of Milan Cortina 2026. On Sunday evening, in the beautiful Arena of Verona, the two champions will be the first of the Italian expedition to parade. In this way we will be able to make the world understand that behind the various successes there is not only technical or tactical ability, but above all willpower counts. That ability that Italian athletes have been able to demonstrate during these weeks of the Olympic Games. CONI’s choice is significant; because it wanted to reward our athletes in biathlon and speed skating. Two sports that have given us incredible emotions. This decision serves to give credit to all those who helped in rewriting history: with 26 total medals, Italy reached its all-time high, making this Olympics the most successful in our winter history.

Both flag bearers embody the spirit of this Olympiad. Lisa Vittozzi represents those who never give up. After a bad injury that had forced her to stop, the champion from Friuli returned to competition stronger than before. Her gold in the pursuit is a historic achievement, as it is the first individual title for Italy in the sport. Added to that is the silver she won in the mixed relay.

With her will be Davide Ghiotto, the top man in ice skating. Ghiotto was one of the key architects in successfully dragging the group to a legendary gold in the team event. Thanks to his strength and that of his teammates, Italy returned to victory in speed skating, regaining a first place that had been missing for 20’years, since the 2006 Turin Olympics
