Deborah Compagnoni: "Sofia Goggia’s bronze is worth a gold"

Interviewed by ilNordEst.it Deborah Compagnoni also spoke about Sofia Goggia’s Olympics. “She won a very heavy bronze, in a delicate mental condition,” she emphasized. “That bronze looks so much like a gold. It was not easy to come down after such a serious injury, the helicopter over her head and twenty minutes of stop. She did very well. Sometimes Sofia errs on the side of instinct. She is an instinctive one, she attacks the slope without half measures, it has always been her strength but sometimes also a limitation”.

“The bronze in downhill came because Sofia understood that the situation required management. In super giant she had the best time when she ran into the mistake. Mistakes are part of the journey, but she remains the strongest of all in the downhill. Goggia has a very good chance of winning a specialty title, downhill or super-G. She will also want to avenge these Olympics a little bit, she will certainly not lack motivation” added the Valtellina.

“Sunday was difficult to manage, even after the injury of Lindsey Vonn, to whom I send all my sincerest wishes for recovery – highlighted the Bergamasque to RTL 102.5 -. First of all, I was so sorry for what happened to her. She started with bib 13, I had bib 15: at the start you could hear the screams, although the third gate, where she then fell, was about 100 meters as the crow flies or a little more. It wasn’t an easy moment to handle, but clearly the sorrow for her goes beyond my difficulty in handling that moment at the start”.

“On the Giant I did not feel disappointed. It is clear that, when you are third in the first run at the Olympics and then you finish eighth, the disappointment is also described by the media outlets for what could have been another medal – she continued -. However, to tell the truth, I haven’t been on the podium in the Giant since 2018 in the World Cup. However, I feel satisfied with my race, because I did two heats at a high level. Then, clearly, in the second run, the real female Giant Slalom racers, who had maybe gone a little bit slower in the first run, got their act together and skied a little bit harder. However, I took four tenths in both the first and second runs from the winner, so my race was very linear. It is clear that then they reversed positions a little bit and that can be seen as a disappointment”.

“I have to say that if I had to have a regret for anything, in the case it would be for the super-G, because I am much stronger in the fast disciplines, although I can ski Giant as well. Being in the lead until halfway down the slope with 65 hundredths of a lead and then making a mistake and not being able to finish the race, I was very disappointed. In the downhill, however, I managed to bring home this bronze” the champion emphasized afterwards.
