Ralf Schumacher has openly criticized his nephew Mick for his choice to move to the United States to race in the IndyCar championship. Michael Schumacher’s son raced for two years in Formula 1 with the Haas team’s single-seater car but was not confirmed for the following seasons. After spending two years as Mercedes’ third driver, he left F1 for good to race first in the WEC championship with Alpine, then in IndyCar.

“It was not necessary” is Uncle Ralf’s judgment. “For me it&#8220s a matter of benefits and risks. You don”t have to be a genius to understand that average speeds of 360 km/h are more dangerous than regular Formula 1 races”. Ralf would have preferred that his nephew had continued in the Endurance championship, or had tried the Formula 1 route again: “When I see other drivers in F1, I realize that Mick is definitely better than some of them, he would deserve a place”.

“But with this move, that door is now definitely closed””

, Schumacher continued. Mick will make his debut next Sunday in Florida, at the St. Petersburg street circuit.
