By only nine hundredths of a second Italy alpine skiing could not celebrate another success of Giovanni Franzoni in the World Cup: however, the great satisfaction of the podium remains for the Italian athlete, who on the L’Eclipse slope in Courchevel achieved a brilliant second position in the downhill, mocked only by Vincent Kriechmayr. The Austrian, who started with bib number 9, finished in 1:47.26, overtaking the Manerbese, number 6 at the starting gate, who had finished in 1:47.35.

Just a little farther back were the two Helvetians Marco Odermatt, who with today’s result wins both the overall and downhill World Cups, and Stefan Rogentin, whose gaps were 31 and 46 hundredths, respectively, from Kriechmayr. Two other Austrians then finished fifth and sixth: Raphael Haaser recorded a time 74 hundredths slower than the winner, while Daniel Hemetsberger finished 95 hundredths of a second behind.

No other Italian, apart from Franzoni, finished the event among the top 10: the second Italian in the order of times was Benjamin Jacques Alliod, who finished 13th at 1.56 from Kryechmayr. Just behind him is Dominik Paris, 14th at 1.58. In the overall standings, therefore, Odermatt, who with today’s third place rises to 1,590 points, has already conquered the most important crystal ball, that of the overall World Cup, despite still missing the two Super-Gs in Courchevel and the final four races in Lillehammer-Kvitfjell.

The overall World Cup is now in the hands of the World Cup team.

There are in fact 632 points of gap over the second in the standings, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who does not run the speed races and who in any case, even by running and winning them, could get another 600 points in total, insufficient to close the gap. Odermatt, then, has also arithmetically won the Downhill Cup, having brought to more than one hundred points, with one race of the fastest discipline ever to be run, the gap to the second in the standings, compatriot Franjo von Allmen, who fell today in the fourth sector of his own downhill.
