After four consecutive women’s World Cup races won by Italian athletes (Sofia Goggia in the Super-G in Soldeu, Laura Pirovano in the two downhill races in Val di Fassa and Elena Curtoni in the Super-G, also at the Volata), on Saturday it was another flag to hoist over the head of a winner, the Austrian one: Julia Scheib in fact conquered the giant slalom in Åre, Sweden, the penultimate seasonal event of the discipline. Scheib, with the success, increased her lead in the specialty standings to over a hundred points from second, thus winning the giant slalom crystal ball in advance.

On today’s podium were also Paula Moltzan of the United States, whose overall delay was 36 hundredths of a second, and New Zealand’s Alice Robinson, third at 75 hundredths. Colorless race for the Italians: the best was Asja Zenere, 10th with a delay of 2″78, while even further behind were Ilaria Ghisalberti, 18th at 3″78, Lara Della Mea, 21st at 4″07, and Laura Pirovano, 23rd at 4″43. Off track for Sofia Goggia: eighth after the first run, the Bergamasque lost the correct line in the second sector of the decisive fraction.

Scheib thus wins the Giant Slalom World Cup thanks to the 660 points she has accumulated so far, making her effectively unreachable with only one specialty event to be held in Norway next weekend. In second place is Camille Rast at 471, third is Sara Hector at 429. The best of the Italians remains Lara Della Mea, tenth with 196 points. Goggia, on the other hand, is 16th at 126; Asja Zenere also comes in triple digits, rising to 105.

In the overall standings, however, Mikaela Shiffrin, now fifth, commands: the U.S. has 1,186 points to Emma Aicher’s 1,016, who will also bet on the fast races in Norway to try to mock the 1995-class champion. She remains arithmetically in the running Sofia Goggia, who is fourth in the overall ranking with 853 points, 333 behind Shiffrin. The comeback is very difficult, however, in light of the remaining races (two special slaloms, one giant slalom, one downhill and one Super-G).
