Laura Pirovano looks beyond the result and sets the big goal

After a season in which she has been increasingly the protagonist of the fast disciplines, so much so that she arrived on the eve of the finals in Norway with the red bib reserved for the leader of the specialty ranking (in her case in the downhill), Laura Pirovano treated herself to participation in the two heats of the Åre Giant, achieving a decent placement in 23rd place, an improvement of five places over the first heat.

The spy skier, however, looks beyond the numbers and, to the official channels of Fisi, expresses all her contentment for a moment that is confirmed as positive just a few giocni from the Norwegian appointment that, for her and for Italian skiing, could be historic. “I am very happy to have competed two heats in the giant – she said -. After surpassing 500 points in the overall I had given myself a gift, I enjoyed it. Clearly I will work on it, but for this time I am happy like this. Now the focus goes to the finals in Norway”.

The goal is therefore clear, to lift the crystal globe for the first time in her career after taking the lead following her double success in Val di Fassa. Pirovano, who has collected 436 points in the downhill ranking, has to watch her back against two Germans: Emma Aicher, who has to make up 28 points from her, and Kira Weidle, who is instead 85 lengths behind her. The standings also record Lindsey Vonn&#8217s 400 points, but the American is out of the running after a serious injury in Milan Cortina 2026.

Laura Pirovano, class of 1997, has suddenly become the star of this season thanks to her two downhill successes in Val di Fassa: two victories come, curiously enough, both with the smallest possible lead over the second-placed, a single hundredth: mocked, in the’order, first Emma Aicher on March 6 and then Cornelia Huetter twenty-four hours later.

Seven times an Italian athlete has won the downhill World Cup: Isolde Kostner has succeeded on two occasions (2001 and 2002), Sofia Goggia four times (2018, 2021, 2022, 2023), while last year Federica Brignone did so.
