Sofia Goggia turns over a new leaf: last energies for grand finale

Sofia Goggia sees the glass half full after her exit in the second run of the giant slalom in Are: the skier from Bergamo, eighth after the first run, made a mistake after a bump. After the race, the Italian champion expressed her disappointment but told of being more confident ahead of the finals in Lillehammer.

“I did some good stretches, let’s take what’s good. Maybe I gave too much pressure before the bump and it shot slightly away from me. When I landed I didn’t have the quickness to open my feet right away. But the conditions were good, I felt the rhythm of the giant”.

Sofia has a 63-point lead in the SuperG standings over New Zealand’s Alice Robinson heading into the finals: “I regret not closing it out in Val di Fassa and enjoying these races more, but that’s the beauty of the sport and you have to fight to the last: 63 points is not a few, but skiing is unpredictable and anything can happen. I have to go strong”.

The Bergamasque is aiming for her first career Super-G World Cup, a trophy that has so far always eluded her despite her four successes in the downhill standings. With 449 points currently in the standings against Robinson&#8217s 386, Goggia will only need a sixth place in the final race on March 22 to mathematically win the crystal ball, provided of course that she keeps an eye on her New Zealand rival&#8217s result.

As for the Downhill Cup, however, Azzurra is now out of the running: contending are teammate Laura Pirovano, currently leading with 436 points, Germany&#8217s Emma Aicher with 408 and Kira Weidle with 351. Lindsey Vonn, who could have been in the match, will not be able to take part in the finals due to the serious injury suffered just during the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.
