First the outburst over the radio, then the certified doubts in front of reporters at the end of the day: the words of Lewis Hamilton worry in no small part the fans of a Ferrari that, if in the first two races of the season it had been only behind Mercedes, on Friday in Japan saw the overtaking, at free practice level, also by McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri who seem to have forgotten the not a few problems shown in the previous race weekends.

“I’m slow, I don’t have confidence in the car,” the seven-time world champion had told his track engineer during a second free practice session that ended in sixth place, more than eight tenths behind Piastri and six tenths behind the second of the two Mercedes, that of George Russell. In the mixed zone, Hamilton himself tried to give an explanation to these words, hoping to find a solution as soon as possible in order to aim for the podium on Sunday.

“The Sukuza circuit really puts us to the test – said the number 44 on the grid -: finding the ideal balance is not easy and the car, at the moment, does not give me back the sensations I am looking for. What needs to be changed? We need to fix the set-up of the car especially on the rear, I can’t feel comfortable. The car seems to move a bit jerky, this behavior has prevented me from setting a faster time and keeping up with McLaren and Marcedes.”

“The work, however, is far from finished – explained again the British champion, in his second season at Ferrari -. The team will analyze the data collected and will deepen everything in the simulator during the night: the goal is to find a solution that can give us stability and continuity. The potential of the car is not in question: it’s just a matter of figuring out how to unlock it.”
