Former Milan and Juventus coach Fabio Capello has harshly attacked the national team after it failed to qualify for the World Cup. Gattuso’s Azzurri were beaten on penalties by Bosnia: Italy will miss its third consecutive World Cup and will only be able to try again in 2030, 16 years after its last participation. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport Don Fabio took it out on the Azzurri’s defenders, particularly Bastoni and Calafiori: “Italy needs defenders who defend and who are not just nice to look at. They are good when there is to go forward, less so when you have to worry about what happens behind.”

“I couldn’t sleep all night, I still can’t believe what happened,” Capello continued. “We are talking about a four-time world champion team, this is a sports tragedy, a disgrace. It is one of the worst things that has happened to Italian soccer in its recent history,” are the words reported by Marca.

Capello is also baffled by the lack of resignation: “No one here resigns, and that is the most worrying thing. The first person who should take responsibility is the president of the federation, along with the entire leadership. We need to get experts to sit at the table, analyze what is going on, and start a reconstruction from the grassroots. The problem is not just about results, it’s structural.”

At the stages of mourning, Italy needs to reinvent itself in order to be reborn: “It will be very difficult to get up from this situation, but I trust that it will serve to start a real renewal. Italy needs to reinvent itself. Italy is in mourning. For such a soccer country to be excluded for the third time is something very difficult to assimilate.”
