Tragedy after jog: Poland shocked as Magiera dies at 49

Polish soccer is shocked by the sudden death of Jacek Magiera, former footballer and current deputy technical commissioner of Poland. The man died at the age of 49 after feeling ill at the end of a morning run.
The Warsaw Federation announced his death in a statement, “The Polish Football Federation has learned with deep sorrow and immense regret the news of the death of Jacek Magiera, second coach of the Polish national team. The PZPN extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Jacek Magiera. At the same time, we ask that the privacy and serenity of his loved ones be respected at this very painful time.”
The former footballer according to Polish media suffered an illness soon after physical exertion: taken immediately to the Military Clinical Hospital in Wrocław, he failed to make it. He was Jan Urban’s deputy and one of his closest and most trusted associates.
Born in Częstochowa on Jan. 1, 1977, he grew up soccer in Śląsk Wrocław and in his career played for Raków Częstochowa, Legia Warsaw (with which he won two championships), Widzew Łódź and KS Krakow. A midfielder, he played 22 times in the national team jersey, scoring 4 goals.
Magiera began his coaching career in 2006, remaining deputy of Legia Warsaw from 2006 to 2013. In the 2016-2017 season he coached Legia’s first team (winning the Polish championship), while in the three-year period from 2018-2021 he was coach of the Poland Under-20 team. Since 2025 he was on the technical staff of the Polish national team.
