Matteo Berrettini slips out of the top 100 after a first-round defeat in Madrid, and after the match in Spain he did not hide his bitterness and state of mind at a time when he can no longer find himself. “I have not been able to compete at my best because I have not found the right energy and balance. I’m very sorry because my only real goal for this season is not ranking or winning tournaments, but just getting back to enjoying my time on the court.”

The Blue has reported no physical problems but can’t and mentally clear himself: “Lately the problem has not been my body, but the injuries have taken a lot of momentum out of my career because of all the ‘stop and start’ cycles I’ve had to go through. I’ve often felt like I’ve been chasing, rushing both to get back in and to move up the rankings.”

Matthew’s goal now is to show up pulled together at the Internazionali d’Italia: “Right now I would do anything but pick up a racket in my hand, but I already know that tomorrow I’ll get up and my head will be a little freer. In the past years, the Madrid-Rome pairing was always very tough and I was never able to enjoy it because of injuries.”

“This year from the physical point of view everything is fine, there are probably other aspects to be analyzed in order to find the spark that I am missing at the moment.”
