Aston Villa in triumph, Freiburg swept away in Europa League final

Aston Villa dominated the Istanbul final, overwhelmed Freiburg 3-0 and won the Europa League, giving Unai Emery his fifth personal triumph in the competition after successes with Sevilla and Villarreal. Another masterpiece signed by the Spanish coach, the architect of the Birmingham club’s rebirth and the guide of a team built in his image: organized, ambitious and now firmly among Europe’s greats.
For Aston Villa, this trophy represents much more than just a victory. The English club returns to lift a European title after more than forty years, since the unforgettable Champions Cup of 1982. A historic success, celebrated even by Prince William, a huge Villans fan, who was present in Istanbul to witness a night destined to go down in the club’s memory. In Birmingham, meanwhile, thousands of fans watched the final in an arena set up in the city before spilling out into the streets to celebrate the first trophy won in the new millennium.
The final was decided by three authentic gems signed by the stars of Emery’s team. Breaking the balance is Youri Tielemans, who in the 41st minute invents a splendid right-footed volley inside the box on a perfect assist from Morgan Rogers. In the midst of the first half’s recovery also comes Emiliano Buendía’s masterpiece: left-footed volley from the edge and ball into the corner for 2-0. At the beginning of the second half, it was again the Argentine to light up the game, serving Rogers for the tic-tac-toe that definitively closed the game and extinguished the residual hopes of Freiburg, at the first European final in its history.
The result perfectly portrays the superiority of Aston Villa, master of the match in every aspect. Emery still chooses Lindelöf in front of the defense alongside an inspired Tielemans and gives full offensive freedom to Rogers and Buendía behind Watkins. A solution that enhances the quality of the Villans, capable of controlling the match with confidence and personality, never letting themselves be affected even by the problem suffered by Emiliano Martinez during the warm-up.
