Serious accident for Oikonomou: former Bologna and Sampdoria man fights for life, the bulletin

They are anxious hours for former Greek national team defender Marios Oikonomou, who was hospitalized in serious condition in Greece after being involved in a car accident in his hometown of Giannina on Saturday morning. The former footballer, 33, was riding a motorcycle when he crashed into a car and was immediately transported to the local hospital.
Tests revealed serious cranio-brain injuries and the former player underwent emergency surgery, then transferred to intensive care where he will be kept under close monitoring in the coming days. “Marios Oikonomou was rushed to the operating room with a severe head injury; two craniectomies were performed to decompress the brain edema. Doctors are monitoring his post-operative course following the surgery performed,” is the first bulletin from the hospital.
Oikonomou, born in 1992, played for several years in Italy between Serie A and Serie B with the shirts of Cagliari, Bologna, Spal, Bari and Sampdoria. With the Felsinei he experienced his best moment and was among the protagonists of the Rossoblù’s rise to Serie A.
The former Greek national player (6 career appearances), also played a two-year stint with AEK Athens and later with Copenhagen, where he had won the Danish championship. In 2023 he had returned to Italy where he played for six months for Sampdoria before ending his career with Panaitolikos at just 31 years old. Bologna with a message on social media wanted to give strength to its former player: “Come on Marios, we are all with you.”
