Toh, look who’s back: Cal Crutchlow’s crazy comeback at Mugello

The return of Cal Crutchlow to Mugello is one of the most peculiar issues related to the MotoGp weekend at Mugello. As announced in recent days, the British rider replaces Johann Zarco on the LCR Honda after the bad crash in Barcelona that forced the Frenchman to stop to recover from injury. For Crutchlow, therefore, it is a huge challenge considering the very long stop from racing, but also a return with a strong emotional value on a demanding track like the Tuscan one.

Crutchlow is now 40 years old and has not taken part in a Grand Prix since Japan 2023, raced on a Yamaha as a wild card. That is precisely why he told official MotoGp channels that the phone call he received from Lucio Cecchinello took him by surprise: “He called me almost immediately after Johann’s accident,” he recounted. “At first I said no because it had been too long since I had last been on a MotoGp, but when other team members also started calling me, I thought, ‘Why not give it a try?'”.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my career,” he admitted, however, in no uncertain terms. The Coventry native is well aware of how complicated it is to return competitive after so long away from racing, especially at a circuit as physically demanding and complicated as Mugello. “I wouldn’t have done it for any other team,” he explained, referring to LCR Honda, with which he has experienced six seasons in MotoGp. On the physical impact of returning to racing, he went on to admit, “I feel like a bus has run over me.”

The Briton wants to approach the weekend with no special expectations, knowing that the main goal will be to regain feeling with the bike. It should be noted that in MotoGp there are already important examples of riders capable of surprising on their return, after a long period of absence by choice. Suffice it to recall Dani Pedrosa, who despite working as a KTM tester managed to finish fourth as a wildcard at Misano in 2023, even touching the podium.
