Luka Modric’s Golden Ball continues to be displayed in the trophy room of Casa Milan, alongside the many achievements that have marked the Rossoneri’s 126-year history. A prestigious symbol that, however, today ends up accentuating the contrast between the club’s glorious past and a present fraught with disappointments and uncertainties.

For many fans, the Croatian midfielder would represent the ideal reference point from which to restart after a difficult season, culminating with eighth place in the league and the failure to qualify for European competitions. To make the picture even more complicated were added the elimination from the Champions League race and changes at the top of the technical area, with the goodbyes of Massimiliano Allegri and Igli Tare.

It is precisely these events that have contributed to increasing doubts about Modric’s future in the Rossoneri. The general direction would seem to be pushing toward a separation, but a final decision has not yet been made. The Croatian, in fact, would not have completely closed the door to staying and would be waiting for concrete signals that could convince him to continue his experience at Milanello.

In this context, one of the few to try to make him stay would be Zlatan Ibrahimović, who would have contacted the player several times to explain him the club’s project. However, organizational difficulties and uncertainty about the club’s future make any long-term reasoning complex.

Modric would have liked to arrive at the World Cup with his future already defined, but at the moment he still lacks many reference points. The main problem would not be so much the prospect of staying or leaving, but the absence of certainty. In fact, the Croatian would find himself evaluating a situation in which the assets of the sports area, the technical leadership of the team and the direction the club intends to follow in the coming months are still unclear.

For this reason, the former Real Madrid player is waiting above all for a clear stance from the ownership, a signal that can help him make an informed decision. Time, however, plays an important role: the more days pass without concrete indications, the more the possibility grows that Modrić will choose to end his Milan experience and also take away from Casa Milan that Ballon d’Or that today continues to remind fans of what the club has been and what it hopes to become again.
