S.Bernardo Cantù, working to set up a more competitive team than last season, is now one step away from signing Liam Udom. The class of 2000 wing had also been approached in recent weeks by Sassari, but the Brianza club would take the decisive lead in the race for the player.

Reduced from his last season with Rieti in Serie A2, Udom has been posting interesting numbers: 11.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game, with an average rating of 11.2 in almost 27 minutes on the parquet. Appreciated for his defensive reliability, the player stands out above all for his qualities in shooting from outside, as shown by the excellent 44.2 percent from the arc scored in the last year, with 61 threes made on 138 attempts.

Not only the performances in Rieti jersey have drawn attention to Udom: last October the player had been summoned by the new Italbasket coach Luca Banchi for the mini-meeting of the National team, demonstrating how his profile is also held in consideration in the Azzurri. An important recognition for the class of 2000 wing, included in a list of summoned players composed mostly of young talents of the Italian basketball scene.

Landing in Cantù would represent a significant leap in quality for Udom, with the chance to measure himself in Serie A after his excellent seasons in the cadet division. The Brianza club, for its part, is undergoing a phase of profound renewal: last May, the club presented new General Manager Simone Giofrè, who immediately clarified the ambitions of the project. “My goal will be to transmit to those who will arrive here, to work or play, the value and the weight of this history,” Giofrè had declared in a press conference, emphasizing the will to build a reality up to Canturina’s tradition.

In this context of relaunching, the signing of a player with Udom’s characteristics would fit perfectly into the philosophy expressed by President Roberto Allievi, who had spoken of the need to “live already from next year a more serene championship” and to progressively improve the level of the team. A ductile profile, reliable in defense and lethal from the arc, could prove to be a valuable piece for the plans of the new Brianzolo course.
