The world of athletics and sports in general is mourning the passing of Jemma Stapleton. The Australian sprinter, who turned 25 on June 1, lost her life while on vacation in Thailand with family members. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
The Victorian Athletic League paid tribute to Stapleton in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jemma Stapleton. Jemma was a valued member of our community. Her presence, her character, and her contributions left an indelible mark on everyone around her.”
“On behalf of all members of the Victorian Athletic League, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the league wrote.
Thousands of people from around the world paid tribute to the young sprinter on social media, and a fundraiser was also set up to support the family: “It is with great sadness that our dear friends, the Stapleton family, are facing the immeasurable grief of the passing of their beloved daughter, sister, and partner Jemma, which occurred during a family vacation,” the message reads.
