At 4:00 a.m. on the night between Saturday and Sunday, one of the most important matches in Group J of the 2026 World Cup will take place. At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Algeria and Austria will battle for second place behind Argentina and, in all likelihood, a spot in the knockout stage.

The two national teams enter the match tied in the standings. Both lost to Argentina and defeated Jordan, leaving them tied at three points after the first two matchdays. A win would secure qualification for the Round of 16, while a draw could leave several scenarios open depending on goal difference.

Algeria enters the match on the heels of a crucial comeback victory over Jordan, secured thanks to goals from Benbouali and Gouiri. This result has reignited the “Desert Warriors’” hopes following their heavy opening-match defeat to Argentina. Petkovic is expected to field much of the same starting lineup that defeated Jordan, relying on the offensive firepower of Mahrez, Maza, and Chaibi behind lone striker Gouiri. However, the fitness of Mohammed Amoura remains to be assessed, as he is still listed as doubtful.

On the other side, Austria is coming off a 2-0 loss to Argentina, a match in which Lionel Messi once again made the difference. Rangnick acknowledged the Argentine star’s value, though he did not hide some regret over his team’s performance. With the match against Argentina behind them, the Austrians’ focus is now entirely on Algeria. For the final group stage match, Rangnick is expected to field Laimer in the backline alongside Posch, Danso, and Alaba, with Seiwald and Xaver Schlager in midfield. Up front, Arnautovic—preferred over Kalajdzic—will start, supported by Schmid, Wanner, and Sabitzer.

Austria (4-2-3-1): A. Schlager; Posch, Danso, Alaba, Laimer; Seiwald, Xaver Schlager; Schmid, Wanner, Sabitzer; Arnautovic. Head Coach: Rangnick.
