A big scare for Frankie Dettori, the famous Italian jockey who rose to fame in the United Kingdom. The horse racing legend was involved in a serious accident on Wednesday evening in Newmarket, where he has lived for decades: After being rear-ended, Dettori immediately lost control of his car, which overturned on the road.

“We can confirm that Frankie Dettori was involved in a car accident in Newmarket on the evening of Wednesday, July 1,” reads the statement from his agency, H Talent Management. Another vehicle struck the rear of the car Frankie was driving, causing it to spin out of control and overturn. Frankie was taken to the hospital, where he was found to have several broken ribs and a fractured thumb.”

“His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains under observation for further tests. Frankie would like to thank the emergency responders who arrived at the scene, as well as the doctors, nurses, and the entire team caring for him. His focus now is on resting and recovering.” Dettori, 55, survived a plane crash 26 years ago: the Piper Seneca he was traveling in crashed near Newmarket in Suffolk, but he escaped with only a broken ankle and some scrapes.

Considered the world’s most popular jockey, Dettori rose to fame in 1996 when he won all seven races at Ascot in a single day. Among the most prestigious races he has won is the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, which he has claimed six times. In total, the Sardinian-born jockey has racked up over 3,500 wins in 24 countries.
