An epic victory for Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of Wimbledon: the Piedmontese tennis player defeated Canada’s Gabriel Diallo in five sets, advancing to the third round of the London Grand Slam, where he will face top seed Taylor Fritz. There was loud applause for the Italian as he prevailed in a marathon match that lasted about 4½ hours and ended with set scores of 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-2. Sonego had to draw on all his grit and tenacity to get the better of the Canadian: the Italian won the first set in a tiebreak, lost the second 6-4, and prevailed again in a tiebreak in the third.

In the dramatic fourth set, Diallo finally managed to win the tiebreak, forcing a fifth set, which Sonego ultimately won thanks to breaks in the second, sixth, and eighth games. The Italian recorded 14 aces and excellent first-serve stats, though he’ll need a true feat against Fritz to advance to the next round.

Meanwhile, the journey of the very young Tyra Caterina Grant came to an end in the second round of the women’s draw. The 18-year-old, ranked 172nd in the world, was defeated by the Czech player Bouzkova, the No. 21 seed and clear favorite in the match.

The Italian, fresh off her first career Grand Slam victory, lost 7-5, 6-3 and leaves Wimbledon after a wonderful experience that began in the qualifiers over a week ago.
