Wimbledon: Jannik Sinner picks up the pace right away and wins the first set against Novak Djokovic

Jannik Sinner won the first set against Novak Djokovic in the second semifinal of the Wimbledon tournament. The South Tyrolean, ranked number one in the ATP world rankings, took the set 6-4, securing the decisive break in the ninth game: the Serbian, despite his efforts (he had already saved a break point at 2-2 and fended off one of two set points), had to contend with a Sinner who was extremely effective on serve and generally very focused on every shot.

Sinner is the defending champion at Wimbledon, a tournament where, in addition to his victorious final in 2025, he also reached the semifinals in 2023, where he was stopped by Djokovic himself. In last year’s final, he defeated Carlos Alcaraz 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4: the Murcia native, still recovering from an injury sustained in the spring, is the notable absentee from this year’s tournament.

Djokovic, on the other hand, has reached the semifinals at Wimbledon for the 16th time in his career, out of 20 appearances. The Serbian has won the tournament seven times, triumphing in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. Last year, it was Jannik Sinner who defeated him, preventing him from reaching the tournament final for the first time since 2017.
