F1: George Russell’s Struggles Deepen; He Blames Mercedes

Due to his off-track incident on the first lap of the race at Spa, George Russell is now 50 points behind the F1 World Championship leader (he is currently third in the standings, having been overtaken by Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton as well), namely his teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Meanwhile, the Italian driver dominated the track to take the win, his sixth win of the season, the Brit sees ghosts everywhere and, above all, doesn’t feel as protected as team principal Toto Wolff’s young protégé.

““I just want my car to be the same (as Antonelli’s, ed.), I’m not asking for anything better,” thundered George Russell, increasingly convinced that his Mercedes isn’t the same as the Italian driver’s.

Recently, the British driver himself had pointed out that, given the technical issues he’s facing, it’s not a fair fight against Kimi Antonelli. Now he’s issued a direct “request” to the team to step in and give him a car with the same potential. Some believe that George Russell’s current state of mind stems from a period of total identity crisis. This was supposed to be his year, but instead he’s struggling to keep up with the talent of his young teammate, who is increasingly on track to win the World Championship title that the Briton believed could be his at the start of the season.
