CT Italia: Andrea Pirlo Edits His Social Media Post and Backtracks

Andrea Pirlo will not be Italy’s new head coach. The 2006 World Cup champion himself admitted this, amending his social media “clarification” post regarding the absurd situation that had arisen. After coming so close to realizing his big dream, the current coach of Dubai United FC is no longer in the running for the Azzurri head coaching position.

“Last night I learned that I am no longer a candidate for the Italian national team head coaching position,” reads the decisive update added by Andrea Pirlo to his social media post. At this point, the former midfielder is out of the running entirely.

It remains to be seen what the Maldini-Leonardo duo—who had personally chosen Andrea Pirlo as the national team’s new head coach (following Pep Guardiola’s refusal, their first choice)—will do next. There are also rumors of a possible resignation by the two executives, who are certainly not happy with how politics has interfered in purely sporting matters.

This is yet another headache for Giovanni Malagò, who—after Pep Guardiola’s refusal—now finds himself having to manage this new media frenzy surrounding Andrea Pirlo’s name. Not the best way to start a new era.
