The “Invincibles” Milan team was built on Franco Baresi’s ability to lead a rock-solid, impenetrable defense (58 games without a loss in Serie A—something truly magical). Leading that wonderful team from the bench was Fabio Capello. On the field, the absolute linchpin was Franco Baresi.

The relationship between the now-former coach and Milan’s icon has always been special. Fabio Capello, recalling Franco Baresi on Sky, couldn’t hold back his emotions: “I’m having a hard time speaking.”

“He was the conductor of the defense. He could call the defenders and midfielders into action; he was the team’s true playmaker. He brought joy to the fans, but above all to me: having a player with that strength and that balance is something unique,” reflected Don Fabio, a man who witnessed the best of the great No. 6 in the history of the Rossoneri.

Fabio Capello also highlighted the man’s greatness, noting how he was a role model for everyone even off the field: “Few words? That was the beauty of it. His great modesty, despite being so famous.”
