Inter Transfer Market: The Nerazzurri Risk a Setback with Cristian Romero

The deal between Inter and Tottenham for Cristian Romero is getting complicated: in recent days, the Nerazzurri had reached an agreement with the Spurs and were reportedly on the verge of signing the Argentine defender. However, the slowdown in contract negotiations with Cuti’s agents has allowed another major club to enter the race for the player.

That club is Atlético Madrid, which, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca, has reportedly submitted a €30 million offer to Tottenham for the Argentine national team player. According to the Spanish newspaper, the 1998-born former Atalanta player is pushing for a transfer to the Colchoneros, where he would like to play under Diego Simeone. What has held Inter back, above all, is the need to first find a new club for Benjamin Pavard: the sale of the French defender is necessary to make room for Romero and to reduce the payroll of the squad under Cristian Chivu’s management.

Atlético, which is set to raise funds by selling Matteo Ruggeri and Nahuel Molina, has therefore forcefully entered the fray and is now negotiating with the player’s agents. The race is just beginning, but Inter risks letting this target slip away as well, following the failed bid for Marco Palestra earlier this summer.

As for Pavard, Inter’s management is reportedly considering including the French defender as part of a player-for-player swap in the deal for Moussa Diaby, the French winger from Al-Ittihad who has caught Inter’s eye. According to Tuttosport, Inter is reportedly ready to offer 18 million euros in cash plus Pavard’s contract to convince the Saudi club to sell the fullback, born in 1999: a solution that would allow Inter to resolve both the right-back conundrum and the issue of the Frenchman’s hefty salary in one fell swoop.

Still on the topic of Inter’s fullback positions, Nico Gonzalez’s name has also come up as a possible reinforcement. The Juventus player, who is not part of the Old Lady’s plans for next season, is pushing to return to Atlético Madrid—the club where he played on loan last year—but is also open to other options. On Monday, Inter made contact with the Argentine’s agents to explore the feasibility of a deal.
