Italy: After Mancini and Ranieri, Gianfranco Zola Takes the Helm—The Former Playmaker Speaks Candidly About His Role

The mosaic of the new Club Italia is enriched by a major addition: Gianfranco Zola is returning to the Azzurri, joining the federation as coordinator of youth development projects. This move was strongly supported by FIGC President Giovanni Malagò and Club Italia President Claudio Ranieri, who identified the former playmaker as the ideal candidate to round out the technical staff of the Italian national teams, just days before Roberto Mancini’s return to the helm of the senior national team.

Zola, who will continue to serve as deputy vice president of Lega Pro, brings with him the experience he gained in Serie C, where he was the architect of the so-called “Zola Reform,” which aimed to give young Italian players more opportunities at clubs in that division. With 35 appearances and 10 goals for the national team as a player, he will now wear the Azzurri jersey once again, but in a different capacity: as a guide and facilitator for the development of Italian talent, working closely with technical coordinator Maurizio Viscidi.

“I thank President Malagò for considering me for this role,” Zola told the Italian Football Federation’s official channels, “which demonstrates the strength of the project carried out in Lega Pro through its internal structure, in collaboration with the clubs and the governing body of which I am a part.
