Jannik Sinner in 2026 or Djokovic in 2015? The Serb’s surprising response
A clash between different generations—one of those questions in tennis that inevitably sparks curiosity but can never be answered in a truly objective way. Last month, during a Fanatics Sportsbook event in New York, Novak Djokovic was also asked a question of this kind, challenged to imagine a match against the best Jannik Sinner of today.
The interviewer tried to pit two versions of the Serbian champion from different eras against each other, proposing a hypothetical series of 100 matches on hard courts: the 2015 Djokovic versus the 2026 Sinner. The question was very specific: how many of those 100 matches would Novak win? The Serbian star didn’t seem particularly amused by the exercise. After casting a rather telling glance at the interviewer, Djokovic replied with a half-smile and just a few words: “You know the answer.”
A brief reply, but far from trivial. The message seems quite clear: Djokovic implies that he has full confidence in the version of himself who dominated the tour in 2015, but he carefully avoids turning a suggestion into a numerical verdict. The comparison, after all, is practically impossible to quantify. The Djokovic of 2015 was at the height of his dominance and closed out that season with three Grand Slam titles, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open, in addition to numerous other major tournaments.
The Sinner of 2026, on the other hand, belongs to a profoundly different generation, characterized by increasingly fast-paced tennis, extreme physical conditioning, and training materials and methods that have continued to evolve. This is yet another reason why comparing two players from different eras remains, above all, an exercise in imagination. Tennis can change radically in ten years, and every champion is inevitably shaped by the context in which they compete.
Djokovic’s response, however, leaves room for interpretation. No numbers, no percentages, and no predictions: just a smile and that “You know the answer,” which, coming directly from the man himself, almost seems like a challenge to anyone who dares to question the greatness of the 2015 Djokovic.
