Gianni Infantino Sparks a Global Uproar; Talk of Alternative Tournaments

An open conflict has now erupted between Gianni Infantino and some of the major international confederations. The latest broadside against the FIFA president comes from UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC, which issued a scathing joint statement following reports of plans to privatize the World Cup. This stance goes beyond mere protest and, from England, is accompanied by the first rumors of possible alternative competitions to those organized by FIFA.

The document was signed by Aleksander Ceferin, UEFA president; Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, AFC president; and Victor Montagliani, CONCACAF president, along with the general secretaries of the three confederations. The message is clear from the outset: “Soccer does not belong to any individual.”

According to reports in the British press, UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF have begun discussing the possibility of organizing their own competitions as alternatives to those of FIFA. For now, these are merely preliminary assessments, with no concrete plan yet defined.

The idea, however, takes on particular significance in the context of the current crisis. The goal would be to provide players with new opportunities for international competition and, at the same time, reduce the confederations’ dependence on the world governing body. A prospect that, should it become a reality, would represent an unprecedented rupture in the balance of international soccer.
