Inter Transfer Market: Cristian Chivu Alarms Fans About Lautaro Martinez’s Future

The 2026/27 Serie A season kicks off right away with the Italian champions. Inter opens the new season against Monza, and Cristian Chivu approaches the match with ambition, but also with an awareness of the responsibilities that come with being the Nerazzurri following last season’s title win. “We’re starting from scratch, but we know we’re the team to beat, and we’ll strive to be competitive in line with our ambitions,” explained the coach. “The goal must be to maintain the level this team has proven it can achieve in recent years—and perhaps take it a step further. With the quality, hunger, and humility of these players, I believe we can do great things again.”
One of the most sensitive issues remains the future of Lautaro Martinez, who is at the center of transfer rumors linking him to Barcelona. Chivu doesn’t mince words: “The transfer market is always like this at this time of year. We’re pleased that certain players are being talked about because it means they’re recognized as great soccer players. It’s likely that people will continue to talk about him over the next ten days.”
The coach considers the captain a key piece of the Nerazzurri’s project: “Lautaro is our captain; we’re holding on to him tightly because he represents everything we’ve been and want to be.” He then adds: “I believe he’ll stay for a long time; we want to build something important around him, just as we’ve done in recent years. We want him to stay, but the transfer market is unpredictable, so I can’t answer that question.”
It remains to be seen whether Lautaro will be available against Monza. “Obviously, his preseason started late—we’ll see,” explained Chivu, who doesn’t seem to have any particular needs regarding incoming transfers: “We have a high-quality, competitive roster; we’re starting from a good foundation, and we have a duty to improve.”
Finally, Chivu looks ahead to the Scudetto race without naming any favorites: “I’m not afraid of anyone; the league will determine each team’s true worth. I’m focused on the team’s growth and not settling for what we’ve already achieved.”
