Milan Transfer Market: Rafael Leao at a Crossroads—New Offer on the Table, Decision Imminent

Aston Villa has once again approached Milan, after previously inquiring about Fikayo Tomori. The Birmingham club, which is also looking for a forward to round out its roster, has in fact added Rafael Leao to its list of players to evaluate, alongside Nicolas Jackson, who is set to leave Chelsea. This marks the first real interest from the Premier League in the Portuguese player after weeks of waiting, and it comes at a time when the MVP of the 2021–2022 Scudetto season seems increasingly distant from the Rossoneri’s plans.

Contacts between Milan and Aston Villa are intense, and the Europa League champions are exploring the best offer to present to the Rossoneri and to Leao’s agent, Jorge Mendes. Milan’s demand remains unchanged: at least 50 million euros are needed to let go of a player whom Amorim appears to have sidelined. The coach’s remarks (“It’s not important right now; let’s focus on the field”) confirmed a situation that has been dragging on for days: Leao is no longer central to the team’s plans, and the club is waiting for the transfer market to run its course.

The situation surrounding the Portuguese player remains complex, however. Galatasaray had tried to convince him with an offer of 40 million plus bonuses and a contract worth 12 million net, but Leao never showed interest in moving to Turkey. Al-Hilal had gone even further, offering 15 million net per season, but a move outside Europe is not appealing to him.

In Italy, Roma has shown concrete interest, proposing a loan with a fee of around 4 million and an obligation to buy for 41 million upon the fulfillment of certain conditions, covering 80% of his salary thanks to the “decreto crescita.” Milan, however, would only consider the proposal if no more substantial offers were to come in.

The latest development, however, is that the Premier League is now truly making a move. Aston Villa represents an opportunity Leao has been waiting for, although it remains to be seen whether the Claret & Blue—who will be competing in the Champions League—align with his ambitions. Milan is watching, Mendes is listening, and the player is weighing his options: the final days of the transfer window will be decisive.
