Tadej Pogacar’s Shocking Withdrawal: The Vuelta Loses Its Leader

The 2026 Vuelta is experiencing its most dramatic moment. Tadej Pogacar, a rider for UAE Emirates Team-XRG and the race’s undisputed leader with three stage wins in the first seven stages and the red jersey firmly on his shoulders, was forced to withdraw after a crash that occurred 33 km from the finish line of the eighth stage, shortly after the intermediate sprint in Simat de la Valldigna.

The day had already been marked by an early crash before the start involving Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), another contender in the general classification, but the incident that changed the race came in the middle of the stage: Pogacar, in the middle of the peloton, went down along with Ben Tulett (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Magnus Cort Nielsen (Uno’X Mobility). The Slovenian got back up, his face visibly bruised and bloodied, before being loaded into an ambulance.

Up to that point, the Slovenian had built a lead of nearly four minutes over Enric Mas, second in the general classification, and seemed poised for another show of strength at the finish line in Granada, the site of the final time trial on September 13.
