US Open: Flavio Cobolli Stages a Great Comeback After a Shocking Start

Flavio Cobolli took a big risk in the first round of the 2026 U.S. Open: the Roman tennis player nearly suffered an early exit in his debut against Argentine Francisco Comesana, the world No. 119 who had come through qualifying. In a match played indoors due to rain, last year’s Roland Garros finalist managed to stage a comeback after trailing by two sets, winning 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6.

It was a nightmare start for the Italian, who lost the first two sets after conceding two breaks in the first set (with a total of 14 unforced errors) and two breaks in the second. Then, slowly, the Roman player regained his form and rhythm, winning the third set after breaking Comesana’s serve in the fourth game.

Comesana faltered in the fourth set, and the Italian grew increasingly confident, closing it out 6-4 to force a fifth set. In the decisive set, Comesana got off to a better start, breaking Cobolli in the second game. However, Cobolli reacted like a champion, immediately breaking back in the third game and then closing out the match by breaking the Argentine’s serve in the ninth game.

Flavio Cobolli will now enjoy a day of rest before returning to the court to face the winner of the match between American Nishesh Basavareddy and Australian Tristan Schoolkate.
