Franck Kessié’s official presentation at Atalanta (which, incidentally, came after his debut on the field Saturday night against Roma) could have put a definitive end to the controversy that erupted on August 29. Instead, the Ivorian midfielder’s remarks in the press conference room at the New Balance Arena have reignited the debate, particularly among Juventus fans, who were already frustrated that the deal had fallen through just when it seemed on the verge of a successful conclusion.
“This was a decision made with my heart; I thank the club and Luca Percassi,” Kessié stated. The Ivorian’s words immediately drew negative comments from Juventus fans, who are convinced that the midfielder is trying to rewrite the story of the past few weeks to justify a decision that, until just a few days ago, seemed to be leaning toward the Old Lady.
The saga seemed to have come to a close with Kessié signing for Atalanta, but statements from those involved have kept the debate alive. Juventus CEO Giovanni Carnevali had hinted that the player’s interest in Juventus wasn’t all that strong: “We thought there was a chance to close the deal, but he probably wasn’t that interested in wearing the Juventus jersey.
