National Team: Roberto Mancini Receives a Painful Rejection from a Potential Azzurro Player

No Azzurri call-up for Nicolò Tresoldi. New head coach Roberto Mancini tried to convince the 2004-born Bruges forward to choose Italy as his national team, but the response was negative.

Born in Cagliari but raised in Germany, the 22-year-old forward obtained German citizenship in 2022 and has since worked his way through the youth ranks, coming within a hair’s breadth of being called up for the last World Cup with Nagelsmann at the helm. At the moment, he would still be eligible to play for Italy, but given his long history with the German system, he has likely decided to stay the course, hoping to finally take the field for Germany’s senior team.

Next summer, the Under-21 European Championship will take place, and the Bruges striker fully intends to play in it for Germany, where he has been a key player for years. Last season in Belgium, he came close to scoring 20 goals across all competitions (including 3 in the Champions League), while with Germany he has tallied 12 goals in 24 appearances.
