Zverev-Sinner: Becker and McEnroe’s Comments Spark Debate

Alexander Zverev won his second career Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open: following his victory at Roland Garros, he also triumphed at Flushing Meadows, becoming the tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles in 2026.

German tennis legend Boris Becker took to X to praise his compatriot after his victory over Ben Shelton in the final: “Congratulations to Sascha on his win in New York against Shelton! Winning two Grand Slams in a single year is sensational! As far as I’m concerned, you’re already the Player of the Year.” Becker went even further, predicting that Zverev would overtake Jannik Sinner in the rankings by the end of the year: “I really believe Sascha will take the top spot in the rankings by the time the Turin tournament rolls around.”

Becker’s comments sparked debate among fans: “He wouldn’t have won anything if Carlos or Jannik had been at 100%,” “Player of the Year for doing his job in the absence of Jannik and Carlos?”, “The greatest when Sinner and Alcaraz are out,” “Easy without Sinner,” “Sure, without Jannik and with Carlos just back after a 4-month layoff… Boris, let’s talk about this again in 2027.”

Another great champion from the past, John McEnroe, however, has a completely different opinion than Becker and, after the Flushing Meadows final, posted a provocative message (which, once again, sparked hundreds of reactions): “Alcaraz and Sinner, come back soon.”
