De Rossi rested several starters, with the exception of Baldanzi: the former Roma player was among the most active in the first half, which nonetheless ended scoreless after a fine save by Plizzari on Amorim in the 41st minute.

Early in the second half, the visitors came close to taking the lead through Federico Davi, Burnete, and especially Simone Davi, whose shot was denied by the crossbar. The substitutions of Colombo, El Shaarawy, Messias, and Vasquez changed the complexion and momentum of the match: it was Vasquez who headed in the winning goal in the 87th minute.

In stoppage time, there was also a shot by Traore—making his debut with the Grifone today—that grazed the post; the team will face Inter in the round of 16.
