Luciano Darderi Faces Two Hefty Fines at the U.S. Open

Luciano Darderi was heavily fined by the US Open organizers with two separate penalties that will cost him a total of $10,000.

The Italian-Argentine tennis player, who was eliminated in the round of 16 at the New York Grand Slam by eventual champion Alexander Zverev, was first fined $5,000 for violating the code of conduct regarding the misuse of rackets and equipment during matches played at Flushing Meadows.

Darderi will have to pay another $5,000 for using profanity during matches that was audible to the audience. The Italian isn’t the only one: among others required to pay fines are Argentina’s Luisina Giovannini, who was fined $20,000 after retiring just 17 minutes into her match against Lucia Bronzetti, and Aryna Sabalenka, who was fined $7,500 following her outburst after the women’s final.

After his loss to Zverev, Darderi commented on his performance, offering an overall assessment of his North American tour: “I think it was a good trip: lots of points, lots of matches played. I lost to strong players, and I’m convinced I still have a lot of room for improvement. It was my second time reaching the round of 16 at a Grand Slam on hard courts: once I lost to Sinner, once to Zverev, and last year to Alcaraz. When I made it that far, I lost to the top three players in the world—there’s not much to say, but these are the matches that help you grow.”
