Lorenzo Musetti is putting it all on the line and “calling out” Jannik Sinner

His second-round loss at the U.S. Open to Dane Sweeney, a player ranked outside the top 100 in the ATP rankings, took its toll, but Lorenzo Musetti is ready to give his all in the season finale. The player from Carrara, who has slipped to No. 20 in the world rankings, is facing the very real risk of falling out of the top tier, due to a 2026 season marked by ongoing physical issues that have prevented him from playing at his best consistently. However, speaking to Sky Sport, he expressed confidence that he’ll be able to bounce back very soon.

“The tournaments in Tokyo and Shanghai are coming up,” said the Carrara native, who had performed well in Cincinnati before Flushing Meadows, advancing through three rounds before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. “These are two important events; I know I can play good tennis, especially if I’m physically fit. The goal is to do well at both the ATP 500 in Japan and the Masters 1000 in China.”

Musetti then sent an indirect message to Jannik Sinner: he wants to be at the ATP Finals too, even though his chances are rather slim: “I need to do well at the two Asian tournaments; if I do, there’s a chance I can climb back up the rankings. Then there will be Lyon, Vienna, and Paris. However, it will be the tournaments in Tokyo and Shanghai that will tell me if I can make it to the Finals.”

In the Race—the ranking that takes into account only annual results and determines the participants in the end-of-season ATP Finals— Musetti is currently 31st with 1,285 points, well behind the top eight (as things stand, the last player to qualify would be Daniil Medvedev, who has accumulated 2,780 points). He’ll need strong results this fall to have any hope of competing in November at the Palasport Olimpico in Turin, which will once again host the tournament featuring the “champions of champions.”
