Maurizio Sarri Angers Juventus Fans
Despite winning the Scudetto at the end of an unusual season marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between Maurizio Sarri and Juventus has never been truly idyllic, and the latest statements by the current Atalanta coach (just ahead of Sunday’s match between the Old Lady and the Orobici) have reopened a wound that, evidently, a portion of the Bianconeri fanbase has not yet healed.
Reflecting on his time on the Juventus bench, Sarri dismissed that period with remarks—made to Sky Sport—that did not go unnoticed: “That season was strange; from March onward, we played in empty stadiums. That’s another reason why I don’t have many fond memories of that experience… However, I don’t have any regrets either.”
Sarri’s comments quickly went viral on social media, where many Juventus supporters expressed their disappointment. In particular, what didn’t sit well was the sense of detachment conveyed by the former Juventus coach toward a season that, despite countless difficulties, still led to the club’s ninth consecutive Scudetto.
Sarri arrived in Turin in the summer of 2019 with the task of ushering in a new era and giving the team a different playing style compared to the recent past. However, he never fully connected with the club’s environment, and criticism accompanied much of his time at Juventus. The 2019–2020 season was also heavily impacted by the pandemic, with the league suspended in the spring and concluded only during the summer in front of empty stadiums.
Even winning the title wasn’t enough to secure his job. At the end of the season, in fact, Juventus decided to hand the reins to Andrea Pirlo, bringing the Tuscan coach’s tenure to a close after just one season. His recent statements have therefore reignited the debate among fans. Many users have pointed out that winning a Scudetto with Juventus should be a special memory regardless of the circumstances, while others have interpreted Sarri’s words as a somewhat harsh reflection on an unusual season.
Certainly, years later, the relationship between Sarri and a portion of the Juventus fanbase remains anything but harmonious, and those few words were enough to reignite a controversy that seemed to be a thing of the past.
