After facing off on the first matchday of Group 2 in Lega B, Ukraine and Hungary will square off in a sort of “Italian derby” (both head coaches hail from Italy) in the fourth round of the group stage of the 2026–2027 Nations League, with realistic hopes of promotion but also the need to ensure they aren’t caught by Georgia, which sits at the bottom of the group. The match will be played at the City Arena in Trnava, Slovakia, since it is impossible to hold international matches on Ukrainian soil due to the geopolitical instability in the region.

Andrea Maldera’s Ukraine kicked off its Nations League campaign with a victory over Hungary, defeating them 1-0 in Budapest thanks to Sikan’s decisive goal. The match ended on a controversial note, with shoving between players that led to a red card for Nazarenko (after receiving two yellow cards) and yellow cards for Szoboszlai, Kerkez, Tsygankov, and Matvienko. In subsequent matches, the Ukrainians drew 0-0 in Georgia before suffering a shocking 3-0 loss to Northern Ireland in Trnava.

Following the loss to Ukraine, Marco Rossi’s Hungary earned four points: the first came in Belfast against Northern Ireland in a 0-0 draw, and the other three at the Puskas Arena against Georgia, whom they defeated 1-0 thanks to a goal by Kerkez. This will be only the fourth head-to-head match ever between Hungary and Ukraine: prior to September 25, the two teams had faced each other twice in 1992, with Ukraine winning 3-1 on April 29 and Hungary winning 2-1 on August 26.
