Kimi Antonelli is smiling even when he’s not racing; the World Championship is now within reach

Kimi Antonelli has reason to smile. The Singapore weekend kicks off with news that could have a far from negligible impact on the Formula 1 World Championship race: George Russell will start from the back of the grid following a power unit penalty that forced him to retire from the last Grand Prix in Malaysia. This turn of events offers the Italian a valuable opportunity to further extend his lead over his teammate.

Russell, once again, must contend with a season full of misfortune. The Briton seemed poised to secure a significant result in Malaysia, but his Mercedes came to a halt at the decisive moment, just a few laps from the checkered flag. The engine failure also had consequences for the subsequent race in Singapore, with the penalty forcing him to start from the back of the grid.

A situation that team principal Toto Wolff described as particularly frustrating, especially considering Russell’s performance in the previous Grand Prix. But for Antonelli, what is bad news for his teammate could turn into an extraordinary opportunity in the fight for the world championship.

Kimi arrives in Singapore with an 84-point lead over Russell, the only driver who still seems to have what it takes to try to reignite the internal battle within Mercedes. That’s why the Marina Bay weekend takes on even greater significance: with Russell forced to mount a difficult comeback, Antonelli can try to widen his lead in the standings even further.
