Sofia Goggia is getting ready to return to the spotlight. On Friday, October 9, in Milan, the champion from Bergamo will be one of the most eagerly awaited guests at the Media Day organized by the Italian Winter Sports Federation, an event that will also provide an opportunity to assess the Italian athlete’s condition following the physical issues that have affected her training.

The organizers have announced that medalists from the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games and last season’s World Cup winners will be in attendance. Sofia Goggia, Olympic bronze medalist in the downhill and winner of the Super-G World Cup in 2025–2026, is a rightful part of this list.

Attention will inevitably focus on the difficult period the skier experienced during the training camp in Ushuaia, Argentina. The Bergamo native’s summer training had, in fact, been interrupted by an illness that caused serious concern within the Italian national team, forcing her to return to Italy early.

Thorough examinations conducted at the La Madonnina Clinic and San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, with the support of the Regional Center for Infectious Diseases in Pavia, subsequently clarified the clinical picture: two different viral infections, occurring simultaneously, had caused significant physical debilitation.

Goggia herself recounted what had happened firsthand on social media: “I’m very sorry to have been forced to return early and to have missed part of my training, even though I’m very happy with how the first week on skis went.” The champion also explained that she was on the mend, though she still felt “quite weakened.”

In the weeks that followed, the 33-year-old gradually resumed training, following the plan established by the FISI Medical Commission led by Dr. Andrea Panzeri. To speed up her recovery, she moved to Favignana, where she gradually resumed training alongside her longtime trainer Matteo Artina, describing her first gym sessions as “a first glimpse of training” after the long hiatus.

The FISI Media Day is therefore the ideal opportunity to get a closer look at the Italian athlete’s current fitness level and her plans for the 2026–2027 season. The new World Cup season will kick off on October 24 with the traditional giant slalom in Sölden, while for the speed specialists, the first races are scheduled for Beaver Creek in December. The main goal, however, remains the World Championships in Crans-Montana, scheduled for February 1–14, 2027.
