Cristiano Ronaldo: The Case Is Not Closed—Suspension and Proceedings

The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Soccer Federation has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo and has also ordered his non-automatic provisional suspension. At the heart of the matter is the Portuguese star’s decision to leave the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark. The proceedings have been classified as urgent and will remain confidential until the conclusion of the preliminary investigation.
The Federation made the decision official in a statement: “Initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, by resolution of the Non-Professional Section dated October 9, 2026, for the purpose of determining the disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on October 7, 2026.” The document also specifies that, following the automatic provisional suspension applied until the proceedings began, a new non-automatic provisional suspension has been ordered. The case file was forwarded on October 10 to the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission, with a ban on publicity until the conclusion of the investigation.
The rift is reportedly rooted in his relationship with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo reportedly decided to leave the training camp following the coach’s remarks, in which he had effectively announced that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would be benched again against Denmark, following his previous benching in the match against Norway.
Both Jesus and federation president Pedro Proença had tried to convince the captain to stay in Copenhagen, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Subsequently, Ronaldo took to social media to share his side of the story, admitting responsibility for his decision and declaring himself ready to accept the consequences.
“Jorge Jesus went back on his word. I apologize for leaving, I accept the consequences of my actions, and I’m willing to return after my suspension,” wrote the Portuguese star. The head coach’s reaction was quite different, as he showed no intention of revisiting the matter. “I’m going to the Federation to work, to focus on the team and the Portuguese national team. I have nothing else to add,” Jesus stated.
