Carlos Alcaraz complains, a response follows, and the debate erupts: even Jannik Sinner’s fans are taking sides

Carlos Alcaraz’s surprise elimination in the third round of the Shanghai Masters 1000 at the hands of Zizou Bergs continues to spark debate. It’s not just the result that’s in the spotlight, but also the statements made by the Spaniard after the match. Alcaraz focused on the playing conditions, explaining that he noticed significant differences compared to previous days and complaining about the ball’s erratic behavior.
While making it clear that he did not want to make excuses for the loss, the Murcia native spoke of heavier balls and a court that was noticeably slower than what he had encountered during practice and in the previous round, urging the organizers to reflect on the situation. Alcaraz’s comments certainly did not go unnoticed and drew a direct response from his opponent.
“I don’t think the balls are the problem, since they’re exactly the same ones used in Tokyo,” Bergs explained at a press conference, noting that Alcaraz had won the tournament in Japan. It’s true that there were some unusual bounces during the match—I’d already noticed them during warm-ups—but these are occasional occurrences, I’d say one in twenty. Personally, I think the quality of the courts and the balls is very good.”
The exchange of views between the two tennis players inevitably sparked a debate on social media. Thousands of fans have taken sides, debating the validity of Alcaraz’s observations and Bergs’ response, and numerous fans of Jannik Sinner have also joined the discussion.
The main pages dedicated to Italy’s number one player and their comment sections have seen the Azzurro’s fans split into two camps. On one side are those who believe it is legitimate for a player to point out playing conditions deemed abnormal, especially when the differences are clearly perceived within a matter of days. On the other hand, there are those who argue that Alcaraz’s statements are an unconvincing excuse following a loss to an opponent who, at least on this occasion, was simply superior.
The result is that the Spaniard’s surprising exit continues to make waves far beyond the court. And while Bergs savors one of the most prestigious victories of his career, the words of the seven-time Grand Slam champion continue to fuel a debate that seems set to continue in the coming days.
