The former referee responds harshly to Alessandro Gaucci

Alessandro Gaucci’s comments following Perugia’s 2-0 loss to Vado have gone viral online. The Grifoni president used very harsh words during the press conference: “A referee as incompetent and arrogant as the fourth official cannot be acting in good faith and doesn’t even deserve to referee the chicks in a chicken coop.”
“We need to figure out whether these referees are just bad or acting in bad faith; there was a scandalous penalty call on van Amersfoort. There’s no way the VAR missed that. That’s bad faith. They’ve pulled every trick in the book from the start. They need to show respect—if you’re a referee in life, you must have some issues,” Gaucci thundered.
The Perugia president’s outburst did not sit well at all with former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese, who chose to respond via a Facebook post: “Respect is not a matter of opinion. The footage and remarks from Alessandro Gaucci’s press conference are sparking debate, but there’s an invisible line separating legitimate criticism from a gratuitous attack that undermines personal dignity. It’s not just about disputing a penalty kick or a red card. Dismissing referees as ‘stupid kids,’ accusing them of bad faith, and declaring that ‘anyone who referees has problems in life’ means destroying the dignity of an entire profession.”
“Refereeing is an extremely difficult task. Do referees make mistakes? Yes, just like players who miss an open-net goal. But human error is part of the game; personal insults and a culture of suspicion are not. When officials use this language in the press room, they legitimize the verbal abuse we then see every Sunday in youth and amateur leagues.”
“If we want a better sport, we must demand that our words be better, too. Frustration over a loss cannot become a license to resort to mudslinging.”
The President of the Italian Referees’ Association, Francesco Massini, also strongly condemned Gaucci’s remarks: “They go beyond any bounds of legitimate sports criticism. Insulting match officials, accusing them of bad faith, and denigrating those who choose to referee undermines the dignity of individuals and the entire profession.”
“Those in leadership roles have a specific responsibility: to contribute to a sports culture founded on respect. Statements of this nature fuel a climate of hostility not only toward referees but throughout the entire world of soccer, undermining the values of fairness and respect that must unite all its members. Combating verbal and physical violence must be a shared commitment.”
