Jasmine Paolini sends another response to her critics

Jasmine Paolini is determined to end the 2026 season on a high note—a season that, so far, has brought very little to celebrate. The champion from Bagni di Lucca, who ended September with Italy’s bitter elimination in the Billie Jean King Cup semifinals and began October with a first-round loss in Beijing to Daria Snigur, is silencing her critics on the hard courts of Wuhan, where she reached the third round with two consecutive victories over top-tier opponents.
Unable to take advantage of a “bye” due to her ranking, Paolini had to start the Wuhan Open in the first round against world No. 30 Sara Bejlek: the final score was 6-3, 6-4, in a match that lasted just under an hour and three-quarters. In the second round, Jasmine faced another Czech player, WTA No. 29 Nikola Bartunkova, a semifinalist in Beijing: in the match played on Wednesday, the Italian secured a brilliant victory, winning 7-6(5), 6-3 in one hour and fifty-five minutes.
Her comeback in Wuhan takes on significant meaning when viewed in the context of the season. Jasmine Paolini’s 2026 season was, in fact, heavily impacted by a chronic foot injury that surfaced during the Italian Open, which limited her performance for much of the year and inevitably affected both her singles and doubles results. This complicated situation made it difficult for her to find consistency, especially after the excellent seasons that had cemented her place among the world’s tennis elite.
The consequences were also evident in the rankings, with Paolini slipping out of the top thirty in the WTA rankings. The signs coming out of Wuhan, however, suggest a possible turnaround. The Italian player’s goal is to close out 2026 in the best possible way, regaining confidence and physical well-being, so that in 2027 she can return to playing the kind of tennis that had consistently kept her among the world’s best.
